This seaside village located between Amalfi and Positano was once the summer residence of the Dogi of the Amalfi Republic under the kingdom of Carlos I D'Angio. It was then an independent town.
In the past Praiano had a flourishing silk industry which disappeared in the XIX century. During the XX century the discovery of coral rekindled economic in the area.
Today Praianos thriving industry is tourism; thanks to its picture perfect location, its well maintained villas and apartments, great outdoor spaces and the most splendid, stunning views of what is, perhaps, one of the most resplendent coastlines anywhere. Praianos hotels and rental properties are well suited to please even the most discerning visitor. Even though you will leave Praiano after your visit, a part of you will remain forever.
Praiano has always been well known for being a fishing town. Until a few decades ago, fishing was the only source of income for its inhabitants.
In ancient times the village was situated very close to the sea but as a result of several natural disasters the urban centre was moved to higher ground while the coast was fortified with sighting towers and later with defensive towers. Many still dot the coastline to this day.
The inhabitants of Praiano built their houses with barrel vaults and walled terraces with locally garnered stones. Today these houses stand as testimony to the architecture of their day.
In addition to fishing the people of Praiano gained expertise in the cultivation of citrus fruits, potatoes, tomatoes, a variety of legumes, grapes, corn and barley. It is no coincidence that the coat of arms of the Praiano municipality is adorned with three oranges.
During your stay in this lovely place there is much to see and do. Visit the church of S. Luca Evangelic, unique among dozens of churches erected in past centuries. You will discover some paintings of Giovanni Bernardo Lama (XVI). You must visit the enchanted Marina of Praia where the palms wave welcome at the entrance to the tremendous gorge.
Praiano is divided into two sections. The "Antica Plagianum", facing east, allows you the opportunity to enjoy the sun and moonrise, while "Vettica Maggiore" facing west endows the pleasure to admire gorgeous sunsets against the background of the "Faraglioni" of Capri. The centre of the village offers many wonderful restaurants specializing in local dishes of sea food and fresh vegetables grown in Praiano. You will find bars and nightclubs in the village centre as well as the beautiful, intimate beaches of Praiano.
