Maiori was founded by the Etrurians and was part of the Confederation of Amalfi States: "The Amalfi Sea Republic" for many years. It was ravaged more than once by the Pisans, rivals of Amalfi. Maiori developed a robust mercantile marine industry which produced substantial, first-rate ships.

In 1343 a tsunami destroyed most of the town and Maiori's inhabitants moved further up in the valley near the Reginna Major river. As a result the economy experienced a reinvigoration due also to the launch of paper manufacturing factories.

In 1735 and again in 1773 Maiori suffered two massive, devastating floods. During this acutely difficult period the people of Maiori took consolation in the discovery at sea, among debris from the wrecked ship transporting it, a wooden statue of Our Lady. This sacred image became a symbol of Maiori.

At the end of World War II, after the armistice of September 8, 1943, the allied forces landed in Maiori. The landing took place in Maiori because of its strategic location and very broad beach. Mezzacapo Palace, today the town hall of Maiori, became the American headquarters; San Domenico Church became a hospital.

Today tourism is the cornerstone of Maiori's economy. Bright, colourful beach umbrellas and deck chairs dot the wide, sweeping beach. Just lie back and sun yourself while the children play.
