Furore's ancient, original name was "Terra Furoris".The etymology of the name is seemingly for the deafening noise made by the sea during wild, tempestuous, stormy nights as the gales echoed through the immense, towering walls of the sheer fjords which descend directly from the plateau of Agerola.
Furore was established around the allegorical fjord; which was the fulcrum of the village. For many years the fjord was inhabited by fishermen. As a natural port, it enabled the growth of a fishing economy. In addition to fishing, there was a viable agricultural based industry. Although small in scale it produced vegetables, olives and citrus fruits of very high quality. Indigenous plants and herbs, from which vital oils and curative balms were derived, grew wild.
Furore is clearly defined as a village of two distinct parts. There is the area on the sea which attracts tourists because of its innate, dramatic beauty; where the fjord experiences a rendezvous with the bejeweled Mediterranean Sea and the lovely, diminutive, sandy beach enveloped by the steep canyon walls. While bathing in the crystal blue sea, look up above to the bridge which transverses the ribbon thin ravine. You can take this road to the other part of Furore. This section of the village is the more traditional agricultural area. Here some of the best grapes on the coast ripen under the Amalfi coast's luminescent, yellow sun. Here, also, one can discover some of the last unspoiled ruins on the Amalfi Coast. These two separate parts of the village are linked by long staircases built during the period of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi.
A very good vantage point for walking the Amalfi coast awaits you in Furore. Agerola, Amalfi, Praiano and Positano and the notably famous Sentiero degli Dei, each a walking adventure with magnificent views amidst leafy, flourishing, flowering Nature. Look over the pretty clinging houses with their tiny, terraced gardens to the Isle of Capri. It is no wonder that the great film director, Roberto Rossellini set one of the episodes of the 1948 film "L'Amore" in charming Furore. Entitled "Miracolo", it starred Anna Magnani and Federico Fellini. From here you will cease to possess the power to define the pretty pinks, fuchsias, purples, yellows and periwinkles as bougainvillea. You will see only sea and sky and delicate, diaphanous, colourful clouds framing the horizon.
